Christine Phillips is a clinician who has taught applied social sciences to over 950 medical students and masters students. In a program of teaching that aims to develop thoughtful, self-reflective practitioners, she has also supported them to respond in practical ways to inequity in race and gender. She continues to mentor students as they become doctors and professionals in the fields of social medicine, following their development from novices to experts.

Her teaching philosophy draws on the conviction that learning medicine is in part an apprenticeship in moral and ethical practice. Medical education can demand so much assimilation of knowledge and clinical skills that learning to care, advocate for others and recognise one's own perspectives can sometimes be sidelined. Her aim is to bring humanity into medical education, exploring and exploding equity myths that derail medical science and practice, and thus creating an environment where every student -regardless of race or gender - can have a fulfilling career in medicine.
