Dr Joanne Wallis
In an increasingly competitive job market, characterised by thousands of applicants applying for a shrinking pool of public service and private industry positions, I believe that university should prepare students for future study or work. In response to this, I have developed inspiring approaches to teaching and learning that influence and motivate my students to put their skills into practice in "real world" settings and acquire skills that will set them apart from their peers.
I am able to do this in my position as Senior Lecturer in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) at the Australian National 51³Ô¹ÏÍø (ANU). I teach 'Introduction to International Security' and 'Security in the South Pacific: Is it Australia's "Arc of Instability"?'. I was Convener of the Asia-Pacific (now International) Security program from 2012 until the end of 2014, when I went on maternity leave. I was also SDSC Interim Director of Studies from August to November 2014.
My passion for teaching and learning is evident in the time I have devoted to developing innovative courses, experiential learning, creative assessment and technology-enhanced participation. This passion has been recognised with an ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Award for Teaching Excellence, the ANU Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence (Early Career) 2016, Fellowship of the ANU Higher Education Academy Educational Fellowship Scheme in 2014, and an Australian Award for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Teaching - Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2016.
