Professor Stuart Wyithe

Director of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics

Stuart Wyithe became Director of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in early 2023 after 20 years at The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø of Melbourne. His experience included extensive service on Academic Board committees associated with teaching quality assurance and higher degree research management. He held 51³Ô¹ÏÍø leadership positions including as Associate Dean, Research and as Associate Dean, Graduate Research in which he respectively led activities including science research strategy, and whole of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø policy regarding research degree load, completion and scholarships. Stuart was also the Head of the School of Physics, including oversight of a large undergraduate program.  Stuart has held leadership roles including an ARC Laureate Fellowship, and as Director of an ARC Centre of Excellence. He was chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Astronomy, led the Australian Astronomy Decadal Plan, and has been President of the Astronomical Society of Australia. Since joining ANU, he has been a member of the College Executive Committee. The ANU is facing challenges that mirror those met by other Australian Universities in past years, and will need to find solutions that preserve it’s unique role as the National 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. Stuart is enthusiastic about using his academic governance experience to contribute to the ANU through its Academic Board in this time of significant change.
