LRSJ and ANU Film Group present 'Flee'
Presented by ANU College of Law, Governance & Policy
Join us for the film screening and panel discussion of 'Flee' (Flugt), 2021. Flee follows the journey of Amin Nawabi, an Afghan refugee who grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one which now threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon-to-be husband. Revealing his story for the first time to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, his close friend and high school classmate, Amin recounts the extraordinary journey he undertook in the 1980s as a child refugee from war-torn Kabul to Denmark.
You may have seen documentaries about extraordinary refugee stories, but none like this: made with a striking blend of animation, intimate interviews between Jonas and Amin, '80s music and archive footage, Flee brings an unforgettable story of self-discovery to life. Winner of over 20 awards, this loving tribute to a survivor made history by being the first film ever nominated in the Best International Film, Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature categories at the Oscars.
A panel discussion will follow the screening. The panel includes:
- Renee Dixson, chair of the Forcibly Displaced People Network (FDPN), an LGBTIQ+ refugee-led organisation
- Professor Des Manderson, ANU College of Law & Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, author of Danse Macabre: Temporalities of Law in the Visual Arts (2019)
