The rundown - information you need at a glance
|
- HRMS and HORUS will be unavailable from 3pm to 11pm on Thursday 11 April 2024 to assist with important maintenance work.
- Planned network outage: The ANU firewalls are being upgraded on Saturday 13 April between 6am and 2pm. This outage will impact all systems and services hosted on the network, except for Microsoft 365.

Chancellor The Hon Julie Bishop appointed UN special envoy
|
Chancellor The Hon Julie Bishop has been appointed as the United Nations’ Special Envoy on Myanmar. Before taking up the role of ANU Chancellor in 2020, Julie was Australia’s first female foreign minister, a role she held from 2013 to 2018.
The UN said Julie brings “extensive political, legal management and senior leadership experience to the role”. Julie will continue in her role as ANU Chancellor while also undertaking her work with the UN.

How daylight savings affects your sleep and what you can do about it
|
If you find the daylight savings time change disorienting, you’re not alone. Aside from inconveniencing those of us with oven clocks, analogue watches and older cars, research has shown that the transitions in and out of daylight savings can also affect our bodies.
Dr Tergel Namsrai, a neuroscientist from the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, explains the surprising health risks of daylight savings, and little hacks that can help us feel well when the clock changes.

On campus pathology services re-open
|
After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, pathology services will return on-campus starting Monday 8 April 2024.
Pathology services will be co-located with ANU Medical Centre. Services are offered by Capital Pathology and will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am-12.30pm.

Advancing learning and teaching

Advancing learning and teaching (ALT) is a 6-week program that enables educators to take a more holistic look at their course with the intention to improve the education experience from the perspective of both student and educator. ALT will enhance your knowledge, skills and professional judgement with course construction and the associated elements enabling you to review and redesign your own course.

How can we support low carbon travel?
|
Having good data on university travel emissions patterns is vital if we want to reduce our travel footprint. Now all staff have access to a , developed by ANU Below Zero with the ANU Software Innovation Institute. The tracker compiles an inventory of our travel emissions since 2019 and maps the landscape of university travel across ANU.
The tracker shows that in 2023 our travel emissions were 33 per cent less than in 2019, a positive step towards our 50 per cent travel emissions reduction goal. A recent survey found that more than three quarters of staff support the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s goal to reduce these emissions. ANU is working to support staff to be successful with a lower carbon footprint.

Emeritus Professor Bob Dewar has sadly passed away in Cambridge, UK.
Bob was a giant in the field of theoretical plasma physics and made enormous contributions to the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

ANU Research Portal Plus is coming soon
|
Research Portal Plus (RP+) is the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's new system for research profiles and publications, set to replace the ANU Researchers Pages, the CAP Pure Pilot, the CASS publications web tool and the ARIES Publications module.
Scheduled to go live in late June 2024, RP+ will provide a centralised location for researchers to easily access and manage their academic profile and content in one location.
A dedicated RP+ SharePoint site is under development and a link to this site will be shared with you soon. The site will contain useful information about the introduction of RP+, frequently asked questions, the project timeline and more.

A reminder that this is the last week to vote for the next professional staff member on the ANU Council. Voting will close at 5pm (AEST) this Friday 12 April 2024.
You can view the list of nominees and a statement from each candidate and the election details.
To be eligible to vote in this ballot you must be a member of the professional staff and must have been a full-time, part-time or fixed term professional staff appointment in the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø on payday 29 February 2024 and paid a salary by the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø on that day.

Calling for 2024 Vice-Chancellor Award for Reconciliation nominations
|
The Vice-Chancellor Award for Reconciliation aims to encourage and recognise ANU staff members for initiatives and activities that support the pursuit of reconciliation, within the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø or beyond.
Last year's recipients, Dr Oliva Evans and Dr Junwen Chen, demonstrated leadership in developing the course 'PSYC2012 Culture and Psychology' which has had a significant impact on students by addressing the colonial roots of psychology and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
Nominations close 29 April.

ANU Employability Framework
|
Endorsed by Academic Board and the Learning and Teaching Committee, the new is designed to improve student employability by strengthening good practice and enabling a growing range of initiatives to build a well-coordinated and supportive environment.
The Framework was developed by a working group with representatives from all colleges, ANUSA, and relevant Service Division teams, who also developed a set of recommendations for the Framework’s implementation.
Connect with the growing program by joining the new Community of Practice for Careers and Employability. This group will focus on linking good practice, burning questions, collaboration and professional development opportunities with anyone interested in the wider careers and employability space.

Executive recruitment update
|
51³Ô¹ÏÍø Secretary
After an extensive and competitive search process, Phillip Tweedie has been appointed as the next 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Secretary, commencing 20 April.
Phillip has worked in multiple leadership roles across campus, most notably as Acting General Manager in the ANU College of Law and as Senior Advisor in the Office of the COO and Office of the D51³Ô¹ÏÍø (International and Corporate). Since joining the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø twelve years ago, Phillip has helped drive delivery of our strategic vision, managed numerous major projects and initiatives. Phillip’s experience, knowledge of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s policies and systems and commitment to service and partnership make him an outstanding choice to lead our governance team.
Phillip succeeds Belinda Farrelly, who has chosen to take a step back after ten years as a senior leader at ANU. Belinda has made an excellent contribution as 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Secretary and Director of Governance and Risk since she took on the role in April 2023 – but she has been a great citizen of the ANU community for a decade and achieved impact in many parts of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. She has tackled multiple wicked problems and complex issues and always done so with great professionalism and integrity.
We would like to congratulate Phillip and warmly thank Belinda for her leadership.
