How to register for multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Microsoft 365 Multi-Factor Authentication
Given the rapid worldwide escalation of ransomware and the significant increase in the targeting of higher education institutions, the ANU has implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all accounts.
Tips before you get started.
- Have your mobile phone handy because you will need it to install the Microsoft Authenticator app as part of the MFA registration process.
- If you have lost or changed your mobile phone you will need to contact the Password reset and MFA team is available by phone at (02) 612 54321 and select option 2, option 1, or email at authentication@anu.edu.au to get temporary access.

Installing the Microsoft Authenticator app onto your mobile phone
You are welcome to use any Authenticator App you may be familiar with (Google Authenticator, Authy, DUO, etc). However, the ANU ITS Service Desk provides support for the default Microsoft Authenticator App, which is free to download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
Registering the Microsoft Authenticator App
Using either a laptop or desktop, click on the following website link: Enter your 51³Ô¹ÏÍø ID email address (e.g., u1234567@anu.edu.au) and ANU Identity Password then click Next.

On the Keep your Account Secure page, click on Next.
On the Set up Your Account page, click on Next.
In the Microsoft Authenticator app, tap the plus icon (+) to add a new account.
Please note: These instructions use Apple iOS. The process might look slightly different on Android devices.
Tap "Work or School Account."
Tap "Scan QR code." Your phone's camera will activate, ready to scan a QR Code.
Please note: It may prompt you to "Allow access to camera?" Tap "Go to Settings" then tap the little white circle next to Camera.
A QR code will appear on the computer. Scan it with your phone then click Next.
A number will appear.
Enter the number into the prompt on the Authenticator app on your phone. Then tap Yes.
Please note: If you didn't receive the prompt, make sure you have push notifications enabled.
You will receive a confirmation on your computer. Click Next.
