Fieldwork Travel Approval process
All HDR candidates must complete the appropriate training before commencing fieldwork. HDR Candidates are also expected to have completed their Thesis Proposal Review.
Fieldwork is considered part of your candidature. You remain enrolled during the absence from campus and liable for tuition fees, if applicable. Your College should record details of your approved Fieldwork absences in the Student Administration System.
Domestic & International - low and medium risk travel
All fieldwork travel outside Canberra needs to be approved using the the .
Fieldwork includes research undertaken in a non-ANU laboratory, a research Institute, library, archives as well as activities that are traditionally considered fieldwork. When submitting a Travel Approval eForm, please make sure the relevant WHS Risk Assessment is completed, approved and attached as part of the online travel application.
- The risk assessment should identify all WHS hazards associated with your travel and can be included as a part of your fieldwork/research activities risk assessment on the template.
- Approval from the candidate's Chair of Panel/Primary Supervisor, and School/College Delegate.
These documents should be updated regularly by the student, their supervisor(s) and approved as needed by the School Delegate.
Domestic & International - high risk travel
Travel with a residual risk of High need the approval from the ANU Registrar. HDR candidates should submit the following approved documents to their local school HDR Administrator, or the Graduate Research Office (GRO):

- The risk assessment should identify all WHS hazards associated with your travel and can be included as a part of your fieldwork/research activities risk assessment on the template.
- Approval from the candidate's Chair of Panel/Primary Supervisor and School/College Delegate.
The request will be passed to the Office of Dean HDR (ODHDR@anu.edu.au) to obtain approval from the Registrar.
The risk assessment should be updated regularly by the student, their supervisor(s) and approved as needed by the School Delegate.
Conference Travel Approval process
Attendance at national and international conferences is a common part of research training for ANU research students, providing an opportunity to present research and discuss it with others in the discipline.
Individual academic areas have their own budgetary constraints and requirements about how to apply for conference attendance, and who has the authority to approve any available funding. Your academic area in the College will advise you about the requirements for financial reporting and submitting your final financial statement in relation to your conference attendance.
All conference travel outside Canberra needs to be approved using the the .

Domestic travel
No Risk Assessment is required for domestic travel to conferences or workshops.
International travel
