What Is Search Engine Optimization?
SEO is “Search Engine Optimization”, or simply, the act of getting your website to rank higher in search results. There are a variety of methods that can be used to “optimize” a website for the search engines. These include writing clean, relevant content; linking with other websites and social media platforms; and using keywords and phrases that are relevant to your service or business. When done correctly, SEO can help improve your online visibility on search engines by attracting more visitors and customers.
SEO can and should involve other disciplines within digital marketing, including:
- Social Media Marketing (SMM)
- Content Management
- Mobile Marketing/Mobile SEO
- Web Analytics
- Search Engine Marketing
- Paid Search Marketing
Therefore, SEO is not all about writing content, but also includes the other aspects of digital marketing as well.
With that in mind where is SEO Applied
SEO is applied in many different industries. From blogging to video production, everyone has a role in digital marketing. However, one sector that is especially making the most of it is small businesses. SEO for small businesses is very important as well because it can help to improve the company’s online presence and ultimately generate more sales. Every small business owner should keep their website up-to-date with fresh content and beneficial information to help increase their online visibility.
With that out of the way, let’s dive into this Google SEO guide for Businesses!
The Google SEO Guide to Keyword Research
Step 1 : Keyword Research
The first thing that you need to do as a small business owner is to conduct keyword research. The goal of keyword research is to find keywords that would be useful to people searching for your product or services. This will help increase the amount of traffic you receive, which will in turn lead to more sales and more customers.
Keyword Research is however not as simple as it sounds; although Google has keyword tools, they are not perfect and can be misleading. Therefore, it is something you need to do yourself.
For this part, I will have to use Google Adwords due to the fact that it is the only tool that has keyword tools for Kenya. For example, let’s say your name is ‘Irene Yehoram’ and you are a photographer in a town of ‘Nairobi’. You want to start off with a name like ‘Hire Photography Service in Nairobi’ or ‘Photographing Services in Nairobi’ as both keywords.
Once you have chosen your keywords, go to Google Adwords and enter the above keywords as usual. Then go through the tool.
In this particular case, I chose ‘Photographing Service in Nairobi’ as my keyword. From here, I will click on the first keyword in my list: ‘photographing services in Nairobi’; This will give me a list of keywords that are similar to what I searched for and would be useful for my business.
The screenshot below shows a screenshot of the results that I got.
If you look through the results, you will see some very similar keywords: ‘Photography Service in Nairobi’, ‘photographer in Nairobi’ and ‘Nairobi photography companies’. These are all great keywords that would serve you well. You can add these to your website right away or else save them for future use.

SEO for Businesses is not all about keywords, however. A lot of it is about writing well-structured, informative content that is easy to read. This takes time to do, but when done right can help your website’s page traffic increase by a large amount.
Step 2 : Writing Content
Now, it is time for your business to write the content. You are probably wondering why you have to write so much content. This is because content is what will attract visitors and customers to your website.
The first thing that you should do is to make a list of keywords that you want to use, based on your keyword research. If your website has been around for a long time, then take a look at some of the older articles on there and see what keywords they used. If there are not any, then these are important keywords to target as they will help you to generate more traffic.
Once you have made a list of your keywords, it is time to create new content around them. This can be done by answering common questions that people might have about your product or service, or even just writing about what you do for fun and where you came from. Just make sure that you write good content and put your keywords in the right places. Then submit it to Google and watch the traffic come in.

Step 3: Optimize Content for Google SEO
Once you have written your content, it is time for you to optimize it for search engines. This is important because when Google reads the content on your website, it will look for keywords to see if you have mentioned them. This will affect how your website ranks in Google.
For example, let’s take our keyword from earlier: ‘Photographing Service in Nairobi’. This keyword is a good one because it includes all the different types of services that a business can provide. To optimize my content for this keyword, I will search for ‘Photographer Nairobi’ or ‘photography in Nairobi’.
In Your Title Tag
You will also want to include your main keyword in the title tag as well. Use this keyword along with your main keywords and the two words that describe what you do for the best effect. The screenshot below shows a screenshot of how this might look if I were to use ‘Photographing Service in Nairobi’ as my primary keyword and ‘photography in Nairobi’ as my secondary one.
Make sure that you do not make the title too long. The whole title should be under 60 characters. If it is over, then Google will cut it off and leave your website dead in the search results.
Your Meta Description
You can also include your keyword in your meta description as well. This is what people see when they are looking at the search result, so this is a good place to put it. Your meta description is important because it will help you to bring in more customers, but be careful not to write too much. Just make sure that you use the keyword and your main keywords once and maybe twice in the description. Then end your meta description with a few more relevant words that describe what you do.
In Your Content
Finally, it is time for you to put your main keyword in various places of your content. Make sure that it is present here and there as many times as possible while not being too repetitive.
Add Internal Links
If you have other pages on your website, then you should include links to them. This will help users to find what they are looking for and is one of the best ways to avoid leaving users stranded on your page and make them search for a specific result.
Use Keyword-Rich Image Filenames and Alt Text
You can also use your keywords in your image filenames and alt text. This will help to improve your search engine rankings and give you an advantage over other businesses.
Use Synonyms and Related Terms: Another way to improve your search rankings is to use synonyms and related terms in your content. You can make some of your content more specific or more general depending on what you are trying to say.
Use Keywords in Your URL(s)
Finally, you should make sure that you include keywords in the pages of your website. This will encourage people to visit other pages on this website and help them find what they are looking for.
Make Your Site Work With Mobile Devices
You should also make sure that your website looks good on mobile devices as well for off-site visitors. You may want to use responsive design or other methods to help you with this.
Step 4: Link Building and Outreach
Now that you have created your website and optimized it for search engines, you will also want to make sure that you get people to link back to your site. This will help you to bring in more traffic and make sure that you are getting found online by all of the major search engines.
