Majestic

This keyword research tool is used to find out strong and weak links that are present on your website. It will provide you with quality information related to your website and its competitors’ websites.

Keyword Difficulty

It is important to determine the keyword difficulty level of your keywords. For example, if your website is about “tables”, you need to determine what does that mean to the people who come across your website for the first time? You will need to use your keywords correctly in order to have a high ranking in search engines. When you are using different tools online, you need to make sure that the results shown are related to your chosen keywords. This will determine how accurate and reliable they are.

Long Tails Are (Usually) Less Competitive

Long Tails are found when somebody searches for a number of words related to your keywords. When you’re searching for “tables”, you’ll find that there will be a lot of websites with the exact same keywords that you have. This is extremely important to consider because if there are many different websites using the same terms, then Google may think that your content is not very important or attractive. So, it pays to look for longer tail keywords that are more specific.

Here’s a breakdown of each keyword type:

  • Head terms: These are what you’re looking for when you’re just getting started. They have a higher search volume, and they don’t include any additional words that may cause complications.
  • Mid-tail: A mid-tail keyword is one that includes a few words but not too many, so they’re relatively easy to rank but not too competitive.
  • Long tails: Longer tails basically mean less competition, which is why you really want to go for them as soon as possible. However, they also have lower search volumes, so it can take time to build up a sustainable backlink profile.

Authority of Sites on Google’s First Page

I’ve found that there are certain levels of authority that any website has on Google’s first page. If the site is a higher authority, it will usually have more backlinks and an easier time ranking for certain keywords. Another way to think about this is how often you come across websites on the first page that aren’t authoritative. The more you see these types of websites, the lower an authority level they will have in Google’s eyes.

Keyword Difficulty Inside of Keyword Tools

Now, I know that you’re probably wondering how to determine keyword difficulty inside of the various keyword tools that we’re using here. What I have found is that each tool will show you different levels of difficulty, and they also may not be accurate. I don’t rely on their difficulty levels because they can be way off sometimes. The best thing to do is come up with your own determination for the keyword difficulty by using the methods introduced in this guide.

Step 2: Determining Competition

Now that you have a list of keywords, it’s time to get started finding out who your competitors are. This is also known as keyword research, and it will show you what sites are already competing for the keywords that you have found.
Here’s a breakdown of the tools that I use in this step:

SEMRush

This tool will provide you with valuable data related to your website, such as competitor backlink profiles, organic keyword traffic and paid search traffic.

Narrow Your Competition

Once you find a list of competitors for your keywords, it will be important to narrow that list down by using the tools in this guide. There are several ways to do this, but the method that I use is as follows:
1. Google Search Console and Search Analytics
Tools that I use in this step: N/A
2. Alexa Rank
Tools that I use in this step: Alexa Rank Tool
3. SimilarWeb
Tools that I use in this step: SimilarWeb Tool
4. SEMRush Competition Tool
Tools that I use in this step: SEMRush Competition Tool
5. Moz Keyword Explorer

Step 3: Determining Competition Levels

Now that you have a list of general keywords (that is, not exact matches or extended versions of the keywords) and you’ve narrowed down your competitors, it’s time to determine the competition levels. This is also known as keyword difficulty.

Competition: Low

There are keywords that you can use on your website, so long as they’re not overly competitive. I usually divide these keywords into two categories: high competition and low competition.

High Competition

These keywords have a very high level of competition in the search engines. These are the types of keywords that you should avoid when optimizing your website for search engines, because it can be difficult to rank for these terms. For example, if you search for “best small business websites,” you will find that it has a very high competition level because there are so many competing websites. These sites have the exact same keywords as your website, so using these keywords will not be very effective.

Low Competition

These keywords have a low level of competition in the search engines. These are the types of keywords that you can use on your website without any worries about them being too difficult to rank for. These types of keywords will show up on the first page of competitive sites, so long as you have enough quality backlinks to rank for them.
Ideally, you want to create a Keyword Difficulty Grid in which you can list shows you the difficulty levels of the keywords that you are currently using on your website. You can do this by using the tools discussed in this guide.

How to Choose a Keyword

This section we will talk about how to choose a keyword. This is an important step for any website, but especially for a WordPress website. There are many different ways to determine your keyword phrase depending on the type of keyword that you’re looking for.

Search Volume

I usually determine the search volume of my keywords by using Google AdWords . For example, if I am looking for a keyword for “best small business websites,” then I would search for this phrase in Google AdWords and look at the keyword search volumes. If there are more than 50,000 searches per month, then I’d start to rethink that keyword phrase. This is because most websites can’t rank for keywords with that high of a search volume.

Organic Click-Through-Rate

If you’re looking for a good keyword, then you’ll want to look at the organic click-through-rate that it has. This is an important measure of long-term success because it shows how many visitors your website will receive over time. Google Analytics is a great tool to use for this purpose because it can show you the keywords that rank highly in Google search results and their organic click-through rate.

Difficulty

Another important aspect that you’ll want to consider is the difficulty of each keyword. You should be looking for keywords on the first page of Google, so ideally, you will want a keyword that has a low level of competition. If the keyword phrase is too competitive, it will be impossible to rank for it. The easiest way to determine this is by using the tools discussed in this guide.

Keyword Trends

If you want a keyword phrase that’s trending up, then you should look at different websites in your industry. These websites will have the most momentum because they are involved in the current trends, and they will usually rank higher than websites that don’t follow trends. The same goes for keywords that are trending down.

CPCs

When it comes to choosing a keyword phrase, you will want to look at the price of a click. This is also known as the cost per click in the search engines. One of the best ways to determine this is by using Google’s Keyword Planner tool . Just enter your keyword phrase and the search volume, and you will get an estimated CPC for that keyword. You can then use that number in conjunction with your organic click-through-rate to determine which keyword phrases are too difficult or not difficult enough.

Targeting

You should also keep in mind the previous Google AdWords keyword history of your competitor, because this can provide you with important information. For example, if your competitor is ranking high, then they have a lot of traffic and are earning a lot of money from that traffic. They will most likely not want to spend much money on their PPC ads, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t use those keywords in our PPC campaigns.

Business Fit

Another important consideration is business fit. If your competitors are ranking for a particular keyword and your website lacks the same keywords, then you need to consider whether that particular keyword fits your business. This is especially true of “long tail” keywords, which I will talk about later on. The best way to determine this is by using Google’s Keyword Planner . Just enter the keyword phrase and the search volume, and you’ll get an idea of how Google feels about the keyword phrase.

Advanced Tips and Strategies

We will offer other tips and strategies, but at the end of the day, you need to be realistic about your keyword selection. If you want to rank for certain keywords, then you will need to take action and create quality content for those keywords.

Barnacle SEO

Barnacle SEO is an advanced strategy that’s based on the target site. The idea behind Barnacle SEO is to build a large number of backlinks to your website using cheaper anchor texts, and then use all of those backlinks to boost your rankings. To use this strategy, you will need several different domains and websites with high-quality content. This content should be relevant to the keyword phrase that you want to rank for, but it doesn’t have to be directly about your product. Instead, you should create content that’s related to the product in some way, and then you will use the content on your website to link to the other sites. It’s important to note that this strategy is very advanced and risky because it’s very difficult to track keyword ranking opportunities through a website. However, if you have several websites with great content and a unique backlink profile, then it could be very effective.

GSC Keyword Research

When it comes to keyword research, the Google AdWords Keyword Planner tool is an excellent starting point. However, you will also want to look at the other keyword tools that I’ve discussed in this guide, which will give you a more in-depth analysis of your keyword research. Also, if you don’t want to spend any money on PPC, then you should consider using a website called GSC (Google Search Console), which allows you to use Google’s keyword planner for free. Whenever you’re performing keyword research, it’s important to keep in mind the competitiveness of certain keywords. If a keyword phrase is too competitive, then it won’t be easy to rank for it. This goes especially for long-tail keywords, which are more difficult to rank for than short-tail keywords. We will discuss this more in depth later on, but you should aim to choose a keyword phrase that isn’t too competitive because it will be impossible to rank for a really competitive keyword phrase.

Optimize Content around Synonyms and Related Keywords

The way you write your content, and the way you use synonyms and related keywords, can influence the organic click-through-rate that you receive. If there’s a keyword phrase that you really want to rank for, then make sure that there are additional keywords on your page that are closely related to the original keyword phrase.
For example, if your website sells motorcycles, then you should try to rank for “motorcycle” or “bike”. However, you should also try to rank for related keyword phrases, such as “motorcycle helmets” or “helmets”, which makes it easier for people who are searching for helmets to find your site. This is called synonym targeting , and it can be very effective at increasing the organic click-through-rate of your website. This is one of the best strategies that you can use to boost your organic traffic, so make sure that you’re optimizing content around synonyms and related keyword phrases.

Find “Shoulder Keywords”

If you run a restaurant, then customers will most likely search for phrases like “restaurant”, “food”, or “dinner”. However, you won’t see much traffic from these keyword phrases because hundreds of thousands of other restaurants are competing for that same traffic. Instead of targeting those keywords, you should try to find the keywords that are related to them. For example, if your customer searches for “restaurant”, then you should also target the keyword phrase “what kind of restaurant”. This is called shoulder keywords , and it’s a great way to get more organic traffic.

Now It’s Your Turn

This guide was meant to give you an overview of some of the most important strategies for keyword research and targeting. However, it’s up to you to use these strategies and to implement them on your website. You should also keep in mind that I’ve given very general examples in this guide, but what really matters is the quality of your content and the relevance of your content. If you have a lot of high-quality content with useful information about a certain topic, then people will want to click on those links.
